About this course

The consultation is where most good outcomes, and most complaints, begin. This course sets out a structured consultation: history, expectations, assessment, options, risks, cooling-off and documentation, and explains what UK law and professional guidance mean by informed consent.

You will work through realistic scenarios, including a client who wants a treatment that is not in their interest, a client under pressure from someone else, and consent that needs to be revisited part-way through a course of treatment.

Who it is for: New and experienced practitioners, and anyone who books or consults for a clinic.

What you will be able to do

  • Structure a consultation that covers history, expectations, assessment and options.
  • Explain what makes consent informed, voluntary and given with capacity.
  • Recognise red flags that mean a treatment should be declined or deferred.
  • Use cooling-off periods and written information appropriately.
  • Document the consultation and consent so that it stands up to scrutiny.
